Life at JLR blog
Kush shares how he transitioned from university into the Systems Architecture Team at JLR and began building the skills that will shape his future career.
What do you study at university and what programme are you on?
I’m currently studying Computer Science at the University of Lincoln, with a focus in software engineering. My course covers a range of core modules, including Applied Programming Paradigms, Network Fundamentals, and Cloud Computing. The first two years of my degree have given me a strong technical foundation, which has helped me step confidently into my role at JLR.
I applied to the DPP Software Undergraduate Placement programme where I’ve joined the Systems Architecture Team, where I work on the fundamental systems that underpin every vehicle across our entire house of brands.
What are some of your day to day tasks?
In my day to day work on the Systems Architecture Team, I support the development of system level technology that delivers key features and functions across all JLR vehicles. My typical tasks include contributing to GitLab repositories, writing Python scripts, and collaborating with colleagues across the office to keep projects aligned. I also help produce and maintain documentation to ensure consistency and clarity across different systems and teams.
What is something you've learnt?
One of the most important things I’ve learned during my time at JLR is just how essential good communication is. My role involves working with multiple teams, so staying connected throughout a project is crucial to making sure everything aligns. I’ve also found that people across JLR are genuinely open, supportive, and willing to share their knowledge, which makes collaboration even more effective. My placement year has helped me build meaningful connections in both professional and social settings. Conversations with managers have given me valuable insights into their experiences, while chatting with fellow undergraduates has helped me relate to others on a similar journey. Altogether, these interactions have been a big part of my growth.
Have you taken part in anything outside of your day job?
I’ve taken part in several opportunities outside of my day to day role. One highlight was representing JLR at a Career Fair at the University of Lincoln, where we brought along a special edition Defender 110 to display outside the venue. It was a brilliant experience and a great way to engage with students who were interested in early careers opportunities. I also attended a specialist training course at Intrepid Control Systems focused on Automotive Ethernet. This gave me a deeper understanding of how automotive ethernet operates at the low level within a vehicle, and it allowed me to build valuable connections with people across the industry.
How has your team supported you?
My team has been incredibly supportive throughout my placement. As the only undergraduate in the group, they’ve always made sure I feel comfortable asking questions, whether they’re technical or about the wider project. I’ve never felt hesitant to reach out, and that’s made a huge difference to my confidence. My manager has also been someone I can speak to openly. For example, when I needed help with a specific part of a ticket I was working on, he connected me with a colleague who had direct experience on that project. Support like this has helped me learn faster and feel fully included in the team.
What advice would you give to somebody applying?
The best piece of advice I would give to someone applying to JLR is: Be Curious. I believe everyone here at JLR agrees that eagerness to learn, willingness to ask questions and showing genuine interest in the business is more valuable than you may expect. During the application process don’t just focus on what you have already achieved, expand your potential and showcase how you will grow with this company. Everyone at JLR is very supportive and encouraging, don’t be afraid to ask questions and stay curious.’
