Life at JLR blog
Originally from Australia, Jon moved to the UK 10 years ago to see more of the world and utilise his Mechanical Engineering degree.
Q: What is your role here at JLR?
My first role at JLR was as a Dimensional Variation Analysis Engineer within Advanced Manufacturing Engineering. Ten years ago, driven by a desire to see more of the world and utilise my Mechanical Engineering degree, I left Australia to start a new career in the United Kingdom. Two years ago, I transitioned into the world of Data through a conversion course boot camp. This course allowed me to repurpose the core skills I developed in solving fitment issues in a mass production environment to address data problems across various chapters. Today, as a Senior Data Engineer in the Data and AI Office, I continue to apply innovative problem-solving techniques to develop data-driven solutions that enhance our operations and drive strategic decision-making.
Q: How important is it to celebrate each others culture?
Celebrating each other’s culture is crucial because it fosters an environment where diversity is embraced and valued. Spending my whole life living in countries as an ethnic minority has taught me the superpower of embracing being different. This experience has led me to view things from multiple perspectives, recognising the hidden heroism in others that they might not see in themselves. By celebrating people of different backgrounds, we normalise bringing our authentic selves to work. This diversity of lived experiences plays a significant role in solving complex problems, leading teams to innovative solutions, and making better decisions.
Q: What is your next goal you want to achieve?
Since becoming a father, I’ve realised how fulfilling it is to be part of someone’s growth. Seeing how my son learns as he grows up, it made me realise that as humans we are wired to learn by overcoming the difficulties in our environment. One of my best days at work is where I see someone, that I’ve helped grow, showcase their work that they previously thought was impossible to an audience. I aspire to continue leading teams that not only tackle seemingly impossible problems but also thrive in an environment where growth, innovation, and leadership flourish. By fostering this culture, we can ignite a cycle of continuous improvement and inspire the next generation of leaders to achieve extraordinary feats.
