Life at JLR blog
Nancy’s Graduate Programme began differently than expected, but the experience has already strengthened her ability to adapt and collaborate across teams.
What did you study at university and what programme are you on?
I studied Management with Industrial Placement at the University of Manchester. It was an excellent choice because I got to spend my industrial placement year right here at JLR! Now that I’ve finished my degree, I’ve officially returned to the business on the Commercial Graduate Programme.
How has your first month been at JLR?
It’s been a whirlwind! My first day started with an incredible induction at Silverstone, which was the perfect way to reconnect with my peers and jump back into the business. Since I already loved my placement year, I was ready to hit the ground running and pick up where I had left off.

My actual initiation was unique, though. It’s rare to join a company and immediately witness its resilience first-hand. My first months have provided an unparalleled ‘behind the curtain’ view of JLR’s core operational muscle. It was an incredible induction that immediately showcased the dedication of the teams here. I am now settling into my official role in the Global E-Commerce team within Customer Experience, which is a brilliant, high- impact way to start the first of my four placements.

What is something you've learnt?
If I had to pick one thing, it’s definitely adaptability. I walked in with a totally different picture of what my start would look like, but being placed in a situation with rapidly changing priorities was a great way of learning right from the very start. What I took from it was that JLR’s culture is built on collaboration and shared purpose.
Seeing how quickly different areas of the business, from Business Protection to Leadership Development could unite around a single mission was the most inspiring lesson. It proved that the ‘Commercial’ aspect of my scheme is intertwined with the company’s ability to mobilise itself. It immediately opened doors to parts of the business I probably wouldn’t have seen, giving me confidence that as a Graduate, you have the opportunity to contribute real value from day one. I’m really looking forward to bringing that flexible purpose- driven mindset to the rest of my placements.
How would you describe the dynamic within your team?
I was honestly nervous about moving into my new team, but I was so impressed as the team used the necessary downtime for strategic recalibration. They were actively determining which projects would drive the highest value for the Global Business, effectively turning a moment of pause into a period of proactive, focused development. That level of foresight and positive action is contagious.
How has your team supported you?
My manager and team have been really supportive during this time. They took the time to check in on me and ensured I felt comfortable at every stage of the process. Despite the priorities shifting quickly, my manager was brilliant at ensuring I had a meaningful role to play. They also prioritise bringing me up to speed and keep me informed on every development to ensure I have a voice.

What are you most excited to explore within the business?
I am thrilled about re-learning the business as a lot can change in a year and I’m keen to catch up on all the new development while I was finishing my degree. One of the most enticing aspects of this Graduate Scheme is the opportunity it offers for both professional and personal growth. Through meaningful work within the Commercial function, I’m looking forward to developing a deep and specialised understanding of the business. The programme also enables me to collaborate across departments, while participating in development training alongside my cohort. I’m excited to take ownership of my contributions, work with exceptional colleagues, and make a real impact.
